1.21.1

Split view

Switching into Split view, or leaving it for Preview, WYSIWYG or Raw, closed the application: the window reloaded. That is fixed. The toolbar also finds the editor again after a mode change, instead of going deaf.

1.21.0

The assistants

A release that puts the house in order: ten menus that tell the truth about what the application does, a single command palette, and step-by-step assistants for the gestures that deserved guidance. Snapshots can finally be restored, and a defect that could leave them empty has been fixed.

A readable map

  • Ten menus, one truth: every command lives in one place, under the same name in the menus, the palette (Cmd+K) and the shortcuts. Panels are ordered by your profile, and what belongs to the Pro plan says so instead of opening onto an empty window.
  • "Where did it go?": a help topic lists the old locations and the new ones.

Step-by-step assistants

  • Export the manuscript: scope (active file or compiled project), format, title page, AI marks, detected bibliography, then the engine actually available on your machine, stated honestly before generating.
  • New library: identity, sources, semantic search explained in plain language (model size, downloaded once), attachment to the project, and a report of how many passages were indexed.
  • Guided project creation, pack installation and identity labelling now speak the same language: one question per screen, roman-numeral numbering.
  • Persona: attach to the open project at creation. Series: "Add a volume" from the Project menu.

Your writing, better protected still

  • Restore a snapshot: every restore first creates a safety snapshot of the current state, so undoing is one click away.
  • Fixed a defect that produced empty snapshots for projects kept in a chapters/ folder.
  • Word export works again in every configuration; Split mode no longer freezes on selection.

Also

  • The five in-place AI verbs (Rewrite, Describe, Expand, Continue, Summarize) join the Pro plan, with labels and presets specific to each profile.
  • Identity labelling is called by its name: "Label the file's identities…" labels one file; pseudonymising a whole folder is the job of Palimpseste Pseudo.
  • Two help topics ("AI verbs", "Import and create a project") are now reachable in all five languages.

1.18.0

Reliability & writing protection

A release entirely devoted to solidity: a full security audit followed by a cross-review combed through the application. Every path where text could be lost silently is now closed, reversible or reported.

Your writing, protected

  • Backup versions on by default: a dated copy of your open files is kept every 5 minutes — a power cut can no longer take your unsaved work.
  • Reversible deletion: every deleted file goes through the system trash, after confirmation.
  • Saving now reflects exactly what is on disk, even while typing during the save; the window no longer closes when a write failed (full disk) — and tells you why.
  • Every open file is watched: an external change (Git, iCloud, another editor) is reloaded or flagged instead of overwritten. WYSIWYG mode now preserves invisible markers (sections, AI tracing, YAML front-matter).
  • A panel crash stays local to the panel; before any reload, the application first tries to write your pending changes.

Hardened security

  • Internal file commands are confined to the folders you granted; export and backup destinations follow the same perimeter.
  • A pack downloaded from the catalogue must carry a valid author signature — on every install path; AI clients no longer follow any network redirect (your API key cannot leak to another host).

Comfort

  • Escape now only closes the topmost layer, everywhere — dialogs, panels, palette, presentation; the built-in help is finally fully translated in all five languages.
  • Word and PDF exports also work when the application is launched from the Dock; buttons and dialogs harmonised across the application.

1.17.0

Pack catalogue

The pack catalogue opens inside the application: ready-to-use expert methods to browse, buy and install without leaving the workshop — alongside a full visual refresh.

Catalogue & purchase

  • Browse the online catalogue from the app, buy in one click (Stripe), restore your purchases on all your machines — a purchased pack's download is perpetual.
  • Verified and Certified trust badges: each pack's integrity and author are cryptographically checked at install.

Visual refresh

  • Unified editorial identity (cream, navy, serif titles), reworked navigation, stronger accessibility (focus, contrast, shortcuts) — and a fix for a rare WYSIWYG freeze on very large documents.

1.16.0

Local anonymisation

Anonymise a document without anything leaving your machine: local proper-name detection (NER), optional AI deep analysis, pseudonym replacement under your control.

Since then: this action is called Label identities in this file — one file, not a folder, no restore after rewriting. The gateway is Palimpseste Pseudo.

Anonymisation

  • Three-step assistant: analysis (NER model downloaded once, then offline), one-by-one detection review, application with consistent pseudonyms.
  • Improved DOCX import: complex structures, footnotes and tables survive conversion better.

1.15.0

Dynamic AI connection

Model choice now follows the logical flow: connect, test, then pick among the models your server actually serves. And any server speaking the OpenAI API — LiteLLM gateway, vLLM, corporate proxy — becomes a first-class provider.

AI connection

  • Dynamic model list: "Test connection" validates the server (and key) then refreshes the picker with the models actually available — no more frozen list to maintain. The last discovered list is kept offline, and manual entry remains as a fallback.
  • New "OpenAI-compatible" provider: free-form URL, optional key (stored in the system keychain), ideal for LiteLLM or vLLM gateways. Both URL forms (with or without a trailing /v1) work.
  • Each provider's URL is remembered separately — exploring another provider no longer loses your configuration.

Complete new projects

  • Every picker card generates a complete skeleton: the template's synopsis as an editable chapeau in each chapter, word goals, suggested sections for academic chapters (methodology, results, discussion) — never for fiction.
  • Profile working files included: story bible (novelist), deadlines/sources tracker (journalist), references.bib and a notes/ folder (researcher). Series volumes are now complete projects from creation.

Theme & window coherence

  • The "System" theme actually follows the macOS appearance — live, when it changes; the native titlebar matches the app theme; moon/sun toggles persist.

1.14.0

Portable packs

A complete methodology — personas, reference libraries, project template — now travels in a single .palimpack file. Two-click install, export from the File menu. Built for consulting firms and editorial teams distributing a ready-to-work environment.

Portable packs

  • File → Install package…: content preview before any extraction, conflict strategy on duplicates (copy, keep, replace), install report.
  • File → Export as package…: pick the personas and libraries to bundle, optional "include the open project as template".
  • Create a project from the pack's template: persona and libraries attach automatically on first open — the whole loop takes three clicks.
  • Installed items appear immediately in My Studio and benefit from everything that already exists: attach flow, semantic memory, drift detection.

Format safety

  • Manifest validated before any extraction, strict caps (2,000 entries, 500 MB), protection against malicious archives, transactional install — nothing is ever half-installed.

1.13.2

Polish & accessibility

Born from a full interface audit: contrast raised to WCAG AA, macOS "Reduce motion" honored, keyboard focus trapped on eight modals, unified editorial voice, export toasts with "Show in folder", last-session restore offered at startup, and a silent file backup before every AI operation.

1.13.1

Hardening & startup

Born from a full technical audit (no exploitable finding): atomic file writes everywhere — a crash mid-save can no longer truncate a file —, structural settings validation, anti-injection tests on the Markdown pipeline, offline license consistency check, and faster startup (main bundle down 36%). New built-in "Project audit & repair" guide in five languages.

1.13.0

Methodology workshop

For professionals producing structured chapter-by-chapter reports — audits, assessments, studies — Palimpseste removes the copy-paste friction between the AI chat and project files. A nine-chapter report now takes under thirty minutes of handling, down from roughly four hours.

Save an AI answer to a file

  • A Save button on every assistant reply: replace a file, append to it, or create a new one.
  • Smart suggestions: an answer opening with "CHAPTER N" proposes its own filename; a metadata block offers to append itself to the project's cumulative log.

Guided chapter-by-chapter generation

  • When a project declares its chapters and keeps a cumulative log, a "Generate Ch. N" button automatically detects the next chapter to produce and pre-fills the request — with a progress counter.
  • Never auto-submitted: you stay in control of the request, the model and the timing.

1.12.1

Fullscreen everywhere

Every sidebar panel — and the AI chat — can now go fullscreen with one click. When the Story Engine produces 1,500 words of prose, the split view felt cramped. Escape restores it.

1.12.0

Narrative templates + Series

Twenty classic narrative structures inject into your novel's timeline in one click. And sagas find their home: series mode manages several volumes under one roof, with a shared Bible and cross-volume continuity checks.

Narrative structure templates

  • 20 ready-made templates: Hero's Journey, Save the Cat, three-act, five-act, Story Circle, kishōtenketsu, bildungsroman, mystery, romance, thriller, in medias res, frame story…
  • Beat-by-beat preview before applying; injection creates one main arc and one timeline event per beat, in a single operation.

Multi-volume series

  • A series gathers its volumes under one folder; each volume remains a complete, self-contained novel project.
  • Series-level shared Bible with volume precedence: a character can evolve locally without breaking the common reference.
  • Cross-volume continuity checks: a character who died in volume 1 reappearing in volume 3 gets flagged (declared flashbacks are honored).
  • Dedicated sidebar panel: add, reorder, open a volume; new "New series" card in the project picker.

Notable fix

  • macOS Tahoe: Apple Intelligence Writing Tools neutralized inside the editors — erratic typing (ghost characters, jumping caret) is resolved.

1.11.2

Fixes & security

Printing (Cmd+P) now routes through the system browser — reliable on all three platforms, with access to every printer and native PDF export. Three vulnerabilities in the Mermaid diagram engine fixed. A discreet backup reminder on first launch.

1.11.1

Fix

The Story Engine preflight dialog now displays in the interface language.

1.11.0

Local Story Engine

The full-chapter generator, two-pass (beat-by-beat plan then markdown prose), 100% local-capable (Ollama, LM Studio) or cloud (Claude, GPT). Reads your Story Bible, plot threads, persona and document RAG. Preserves locked blocks and section anchors. Palimpseste's hammer feature.

Story Engine — two passes

  • Pass 1: beat-by-beat chapter plan (3 to 12 beats), drawn from your Story Bible, active plot threads and target chapter synopsis.
  • Pass 2: 1500 words of markdown prose in the project language, in the attached persona's voice.
  • Automatic preservation of <!-- locked --> blocks and <!-- id: sec-XXX --> anchors: regeneration never breaks protected content.
  • A .bak backup before write, hot-swap of the open buffer, chapter list reload. Zero data loss possible.
  • Tabbed preview (Prose / Plan) with warning banner if locked blocks had to be recovered.
  • Three profiles: novelist (opening / climax / resolution), researcher (premise / evidence / synthesis), journalist (lede / development / conclusion).
  • Cross-chapter continuity: neighbor chapter synopses (200-char cap) injected into the prompt.

Sprint L fixes

  • Distinct icons for Synopsis and Story Engine buttons in the Novel panel (Sparkle vs Feather) — no more visual confusion.
  • React #310 fix: hooks moved before early returns in NovelProjectPanel — crash in minified bundle resolved.
  • CRLF normalization in locked-block extraction (Windows compatibility).

1.10.0

Persona switch + Project refresh

Switch personas mid-project via a dedicated modal. Global Cmd+Alt+R "refresh-and-repair" shortcut to purge caches and rebuild the index without restarting the app. More robust migration of project files from older schemas.

What's new

  • PersonaSwitchPicker — full-screen modal with voice + style guide preview.
  • "Close all" command that completely wipes the open workspace.
  • Triple migration fix: round-trip parser, structural-v2 signal and fs::rename pre-flight.

1.9.0

AI Personas + Reference Libraries

The attached persona is now consumed by 4 AI surfaces (5 verbs + chat + 3 regens). Local semantic RAG on persona documents via fastembed-rs. User-scoped, cross-profile Reference Libraries attachable in parallel with the persona.

Persona AI integration

  • Style guide APPENDed (above global), glossary UNIONed (each term once).
  • LLM and output language overrides possible per persona or per project.
  • Project audit detects persona-missing, library-missing and persona-block-missing with proposed auto-fix.

Reference Libraries

  • User-scoped, cross-profile libraries (mirror of persona minus voice samples).
  • Multi-attach per project: combine one persona + N libraries. RAG in parallel, no interference.
  • Fourth "From a library" card in the new-project picker.

1.8.0

New Project v2 + Personas

Full overhaul of the new-project flow: 4 cards (blank, template, import, library), 12 work templates, and introduction of Personas — your author voice captured locally, attached to a project in one click. Extensible project.yml audit with auto-fixers.

My Studio (Personas)

  • Local persona library (Mac) with full CRUD, versioned snapshots, JSON export/import.
  • Attach to a project + automatic drift detection between source and frozen copy.
  • File menu (New persona) and View menu (My Studio, Cmd+Shift+P) entries.

Project Init v2

  • 4-card picker: Blank, Template, Import file, From library.
  • 12 pre-configured templates covering 3 profiles (short novel, IMRAD thesis, long-form report, etc.).
  • Project.yml audit: 5 new rules + 2 extensible auto-fixers.

1.7.0

Resilient AI chain

Local MoE models (Qwen 2.5 32B, Gemma 3 27B) sometimes fail on structured output. Palimpseste now tries 4 strategies in cascade: native → cooldown → channel-stripped → silent cloud fallback (opt-in). No more name-based blacklist to maintain.

Runtime resilience

  • 4 automatic recovery strategies, no user intervention needed.
  • Cloud fallback respects the selected primaryProvider (Anthropic / OpenAI).
  • Strategy label displayed in RegenProgressModal (5 new i18n keys × 5 languages).
  • Privacy notice explaining the cloud fallback, translated × 5 languages.

1.6.0

Sovereign AI memory

100% local semantic AI memory (no cloud, no API key), per-profile workspaces, multi-model routing (one model per task), and auto-injected story bible for novelists. The AI gains depth without third-party dependencies.

Semantic memory

  • Bundled ONNX embeddings (fastembed-rs): a 130 MB Multilingual E5 small model, downloaded once, 100% offline thereafter.
  • Five source options: embedded, LM Studio, Ollama, OpenAI, or any custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  • The AI now understands synonyms ("writer" and "author") instead of merely keyword-matching.
  • When the source is unreachable, automatic fallback to lexical mode — the AI panel never crashes.

Per-profile workspaces

  • Your AI memories are now scoped by profile: novelist, journalist, researcher. A novelist no longer receives their thesis methodology in AI context.
  • Silent migration from the previous layout: no action required, no data loss.

Multi-model routing

  • Optional advanced mode: one model per operation class (short verbs, long regenerations, fast tasks, chat). Three one-click presets: "All local", "Quality-optimized", "Cost-optimized".
  • Simple mode by default: no behavior change for users who don't want to configure.

Auto-injected story bible (novelist)

  • When you mention a character from your Bible ("Emily stepped off the train"), their card is automatically added to AI context. No @mention, no search.

Under the hood

  • Typed event bus for chapter mutations: eliminates silent desyncs (reorder, rename).
  • +147 new unit tests (4,337 total). Zero regression on existing features.

1.5.3

Security & compliance

Security hardening (signing-key rotation, automatic secret scan, dependency audit), explicit project-file versioning, full GDPR compliance, and bundle splitting for faster startup.

Security

  • Auto-update signing key rotated.
  • Pre-commit hook that blocks accidental introduction of secrets into the code.
  • Dependency audit (npm + cargo), vulnerabilities resolved.

Project integrity

  • A version field has been added to every project file (.novel-meta.json, .storybible.json, .journalist.json, .fieldnotes.json, .style-dict.json) with explicit load-time validation — you'll be told unambiguously if a project was created by a Palimpseste version newer than yours.
  • Student tier: 30+ additional French universities eligible (PSL, Paris Cité, Dauphine-PSL, Mines, ENS, regional Sciences-Po, INSA, IMT, etc.).

GDPR compliance

  • Self-service endpoint to exercise your right to erasure (GDPR Art. 17): /delete-my-data.php.
  • Automatic email pseudo-anonymization 90 days after cancellation (retention policy documented in Privacy).
  • Terms Article 6 ter: service-continuity clause (commitment to open-source the server code in the event of a prolonged shutdown).
  • Terms Article 8: consumer mediator and European Online Dispute Resolution platform now referenced.

Performance

  • Main bundle reduced by 79 % (4.3 MB → 910 KB) thanks to on-demand panel loading and library bucketing.
  • Smart prefetch of the most frequently opened panels (Table of contents, Project, Search).

1.5.2

AI & multilingual

Automatic detection of your project's language and strict enforcement on AI models — your local assistant no longer drifts to English against your wishes.

New

  • Palimpseste auto-detects your project's language (French, English, German, Spanish, Italian) by analyzing the first chapters and explicitly enforces it at the top of every AI prompt.
  • Visible effect: smaller local models (Gemma, Llama < 70B, Qwen < 32B) stop drifting to English on regeneration operations (story bible, plot threads, synopsis) and in-place AI verbs (Rewrite, Continue, Expand, Describe, Summarize).

Fixes

  • macOS auto-update: fix a Tauri updater bug that rejected archives containing macOS extended attributes.

1.5.1

AI & local models

Immediate diagnosis of incompatible models + tolerance window extended to 30 minutes for regeneration operations.

New

  • Detection of MoE (Mixture-of-Experts) models with few active parameters that cannot regenerate plot threads: regeneration now fails immediately instead of wasting three attempts, with a clear error message.
  • Contextual warning on local AI providers (LM Studio, Ollama) with model recommendations: Mistral Small 3.1, Qwen 2.5 32B, Llama 3.3 70B.
  • Tauri-side timeout extended from 15 to 30 minutes to absorb long regenerations on 32 B local models.

1.5.0

Project import

Import existing manuscripts from Word, PDF, HTML, RTF or Markdown in just a few clicks — automatic chapter detection, optional AI generation of the story bible and structure.

New

  • Project Import wizard (4 steps: file picker → editable chapter preview → progress → success) accessible from the File menu or the command palette (Cmd+K).
  • Supported formats: DOCX, PDF, HTML, RTF, TXT, Markdown.
  • Automatic suggestion of the professional profile (novelist / journalist / researcher) based on content, optionally confirmed by AI.
  • Optional AI bootstrap: after import, the assistant can generate the story bible (characters, locations, objects), plot threads and chapter synopses by chaining existing regeneration operations.

1.3.0

AI authorship & quality

Transparent tracking of every AI-generated passage, permanent “100 % human” or “🤖 X % AI” indicator, and a new quality panel with AI marker detection and self-plagiarism check.

AI authorship

  • Discreet portable marking of AI-generated passages directly in the Markdown source (standard HTML comments, surviving copy-paste, visible in git diff).
  • Permanent status-bar indicator, clickable to toggle visual highlighting.
  • Removal of authorship marks via right-click, or automatically on export (configurable).

Writing quality

  • AI markers: honest detection of patterns associated with LLM-generated prose (overused connectors, “X, Y, and Z” cascades, sentence-length variance).
  • Duplicate passages: detection of n-grams of 8 words or more repeated between your own chapters.
  • 100 % offline spellchecker (5 languages, synced personal dictionary).

Earlier versions — versions 1.0 through 1.4 laid the foundations: the four editing modes, the three professional profiles, professional exports and the multi-model AI assistant.
